White Day

A holiday celebrated annually in Japan on 14th March.

In Japan, Valentine's Day is observed by females who present gifts to men as an expression of love. Handmade chocolate is usually preferred by men as it is taken to be a sign that they are the only receiver.

White Day was invented for men to reciprocate such gifts. Men who receive a "honmei-choco" (chocolate of love) or "giri-choco" (chocolate of courtesy or obligation) are expected to give a gift in return. Although a gift may also be given by a man to a woman he did not receive one from.

Not surprisingly popular White Day gifts are white in colour and include; marshmallows, cookies, chocolate, underwear and jewellery. Usually the gifts are more expensive, hence the term “sanbai gaeshi” (thrice the return), and as a general rule should be three times the cost of the Valentine's gift given.
